We stayed in the Glen Nevis Youth Hostel for one single night before the challenge, as we had had a fairly long journey to travel up to Fort William from Hertfordshire. The Hostel is so near the start, we couldn't see any point staying anywhere else. The same goes for the hostel at Pen-Y-Pass. It was nice being able to see somewhere to shower and relax, as soon as we had crossed the finish line.
Useful reading!
- Britain's Highest Peaks by Jeremy Ashcroft.
- The Hillwalkers handbook by Steve Ashton.
- High Mountains of Britain and Ireland by Irvine Butterfield.
- Trail Walker February 1996 edition. (Large article on the Three Peaks Challenge).
- MTB PRO Cycling magazine. Editions 25 and 26, (completed the challenge on mountain bikes).
- MTB PRO mountain biking magazine issue 15 (cycled up Ben Nevis)
As far as I know there is no official Three Peaks Challenge organisation, and nowhere where you can sign a book at the start or finish of your trip. It's pretty much a voluntary challenge based on the three mountains that can be undertaken at any time of the year.
Lastly if you are forever keeping your eye on the weather, you will find up to date weather reports and satellite images on the Met Office weather page. Not only worth looking at before you set out on your trip, but very useful for educating yourself about the weather in general. It also has the fax and phone numbers needed for daily weather reports.
